Local Walmart Donates $1,500 On Their Opening

July 29, 2009

By Don Edwards

Area managers were on hand to donated a cheque for $1,500 to Sec. Jane Petterson (L/Centre) and Pres. Donna Bunting (R/Centre) at what they called their "soft opening" of their new superstore Walmart, July 29th.

Located at 1471 Harmony Rd N in north of Taunton Rd. the new location is 18 feet behind the old store. They will then begin demolishing the old location and turn it into an extended parking lot.

Their "official opening" will be in December and have promised another donation in celebration.

The north Oshawa store has been an avid supporter of ours, especially during our Poppy Campaign for several years. Thank-you Walmart and all your staff for your continued support of the Royal Canadian Legion and other local charities.

Where Poppies Blow

From The Legion Magazine

July 21, 2009, by Tom MacGregor

Exhausted and despairing of the endless carnage being brought into his makeshift operating room, then Major John McCrae of the Canadian Army Medical Corps was doing his best to keep the wounded alive during the fierce fighting of the Second Battle of Ypres.

McCrae was no stranger to war. A true patriot of the British Empire, he served in South Africa during the Boer War as an artillery officer. Though he still loved the artillery, McCrae was now a doctor and called upon to serve where his expertise was needed. On May 2, 1915, word reached him that a friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, had been killed directing artillery fire.

Helmer was a Methodist but there was no padre available, so McCrae attended his burial and recited from memory a passage from the Church of England’s Order of the Burial of the Dead.

There are different accounts as to whether it was that evening or the next morning that McCrae took 15 minutes to write the poem with which his name would always be associated.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Published anonymously in Punch Magazine on Dec. 8, 1915, the poem circulated widely in England and North America........Full Article

Long Awaited Sequel To Camp X Book Released

Lynn Philip Hodgson's new book now available

By Don Edwards

Comrade Lynn Philip Hodgson. has just released the intriguing follow-up to his in-depth, ground breaking book Inside Camp-X. On this 10th anniversary of it’s publishing, the long awaited sequel is now available for immediate shipment

Mr. Hodgson, a Port Perry resident, municipal councillor, and past member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Sir William Stephenson, Branch #637, has said he was inspired to start learning about the camp back in 1976, after his wife read the book A Man Called Intrepid, which alluded to a wartime spy camp in the Oshawa and Whitby area.

Lynn Philip Hodgson has dedicated half of his life to bringing to light the most detailed secrets of Camp-X.  He has inspired hundreds of people to learn of the rich history of this top secret, wartime installation. Mr. Hodgson leads informative walking tours and able to recreate insight into the life and day-to-day actions at Camp X every summer.

Camp X was established in Dec. of 1941 as a joint venture between the British Security Co-ordination and the Canadian government, under the direction Sir William Stephenson.

Over the years it was in operation, hundreds of Camp X students were trained in the full spectrum of spy skills including silent killing, unarmed combat, sabotage, demolition, map reading, intelligence gathering and cipher codes.

Highlights of the new book include many stories of the people who were there. Including that of Mr. Reg Miller, an uncle-in-law of mine, who at age 17 was recruited to be an operative.

Also within are in-depth details of such facts as the origins of the CIA and its links to Camp X, how an instructor came to write the screenplay for the first James Bond movie and documents that suggest revealing things never known to the public.

There will be two book launches around the area.

Saturday, September 12th at the Robert Stuart Museum, South Field of the Oshawa Airport, and Saturday, September 19th, at The Grenadier in Port Perry from 13:00h - 1500h.

The book and many other writings by Comrade Lynn Philip Hodgson are also available from the Camp X bookstore.
