IED Kills Soldier Known As 'Gentle Giant'

The Canadian Press  Tue. May. 24 2010

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A "Gentle Giant" who fought hardship on the battlefield without a word of complaint was killed Monday by an improvised explosive device, the fourth member of the Canadian military to die in Afghanistan this month.

Trooper Larry Rudd, 26, died at 12:30 p.m. local time after an IED detonated near the Panjwaii district village of Salavat, about 20 kilometres southwest of Kandahar city, while he was on a combat resupply patrol.

Canadian Among 18 Dead In Kabul Suicide Attack

Tue. May. 18 2010 12:35 AM ET

A member of the Canadian Forces has died after a car bomber attacked a NATO convoy in Kabul on Tuesday.

Killed in action was Colonel Geoff Parker from the Royal Canadian Regiment, working at Land Force Central Area Headquarters. At the time of his death, Colonel Parker was in Kabul as part of a NATO team preparing for their upcoming mission.

The Canadian soldier was one of 18 victims, which also included five U.S. troops and 12 civilians. Forty-seven others were injured.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said "there were casualties among the NATO forces as well as among civilians -- women, children and schoolchildren."

The deadly blast wrecked nearly 20 vehicles, including five SUVs in the NATO convoy. Condemning the attack, NATO Secretary-General Andres Fogh Rasmussen said the violence would not deter members from their mission.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our fallen Canadian comrade during this sad time. The commitment and sacrifice of our soldiers and their loved ones are helping to make a difference in the lives of the people of Kandahar Province.

Dutch Pay Tribute to Canadian Liberators

Thursday, May 6, 2010 | 9:09 AM ET

By The Canadian Press

BERGEN OP ZOOM, Netherlands - The Dutch prime minister paid a moving tribute to the Canadian liberators of Holland in a ceremony with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a clutch of Canadian veterans.

Jan Pieter Balkenende summoned the memory of a 17-year-old private from Vancouver who gave his life in 1944 during the battle that opened the port of Antwerp and the path to allied victory.

The Dutch leader said the almost 1,000 Canadians buried at a military cemetery near the Dutch-Belgium border died in the "grimmest, fiercest, most savage battle fought by the Canadian army in the Second World War."

Harper, speaking a day after Holland celebrated the 65th anniversary of its liberation, said the men and women who fought for the country "gave birth to greatness."

He said the living owe it to the dead to live as nobly as they died.

The ceremony was held at Bergen op Zoom military cemetery, where 968 Canadians killed in the war are buried.
